Contrary to popular belief, vitamin D does not increase your risk of skin cancer. In fact, your body needs this vitamin to maintain strong, healthy bones, to fight infection and promote overall health, according to the Vitamin D Council. This vitamin, created organically by the body when exposed to sunlight, is also essential for the proper functioning of the heart, lungs, brain and muscles.
